Abstract

687,286. Universal joints. HIRST, T. E. C. Feb. 27, 1951 [March 18, 1950], No. 6789/50. Class 80 (ii)., A constant velocity-ratio double universal joint, for driving vehicle steering wheels or drilling machines, comprises flattened fork-ends 1 on the shafts engaging slots 3A in single or two-part cylindrical members 2, Fig. 3, which engage complementary recesses in an intermediate member 3 and are retained therein as by riveted pins 7, Figs. 1 and 4, or by external cylindrical sleeves, Fig. 5 (not shown). The intermediate member 3 may be in two parts connected by a sliding spline, Fig. 2 (not shown), or by an axially adjustable keyed screw-thread, Fig. 5 (not shown). In Fig. 2 (not shown), the fork-end gaps on the shafts are of smaller width than the diameter of the inner cylindrical parts 2A, Fig. 3, of the members 2, which parts have flats to permit assembly in a tilted position.
