A torque-limit coupling between the two articulated halves of a divided propeller shaft on a motor vehicle comprises in an outer shaft member 13 elastic elements 15 which compress two, four or six shoes 9 on to an inner shaft member 8 to grip a coupling pin 11 or ball in a groove in the shaft 8. Excessive torque cams the pin 11 out of the shaft groove, expanding the shoes about a hinge 12 and permitting the shaft to slip through 360 degrees. In Fig. 2, the outer shaft member is in four sections united at 14 and carried in a casing 16. In Fig. 4, not shown, the elastic members are directly carried in a rectangular sectioned outer shaft member and there are four pressed shoes equivalent to those 9 of Fig. 2, and four coupling pins 11 between their adjacent ends. Fig. 5, not shown, has two such pressed shoes, two coupling pins and a cylindrical outer member having pressed-in portions overlying gaps in the elastic members. In Fig. 3, not shown, the outer surface of the coupling pin 11 is wedge-shaped to conform to the adjacent inner faces of the shoes 9.
