Abstract
862,532. Universal joints. BENDIX CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1959 [Feb. 24, 1958], No. 5494/59. Class 80 (2). In a constant velocity-ratio universal joint of the kind (described in Specification 488,906) in which drive-transmitting balls 22 or rollers lie in straight or curved intersecting grooves 18 in the opposed faces of interengaging axial claws 14 of shaft members 10, 12, and axial separation of the shaft members is prevented by a central ball 28 which is turned to a locking position in which it prevents the driving balls 22 from moving radially inwards sufficiently to allow separation of the members 10, 12, the central ball 28 is retained in the locking position by a spring-pressed pin 32 in a central bore 34 in one shaft member which ergages a central bore in the ball 28. In assembly, three of the driving balls 22 can be introduced past the centre ball 28, whilst the fourth is allowed to pass through a cut-away part 30 of the centre ball which is then turned to the locking position.
