Abstract

855,282. Universal joints. DANA CORPORATION. July 15, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], No. 22711/58. Class 80 (2). In a constant velocity universal joint of the type in which balls 20 engage recessed races 10, 16 the inner race 16 is connected to shaft 34 by splines 26, 35 and is axially positioned thereon by a circlip 44 retained in a rectangular-section groove 28 in race 16 and pressing against a round-section groove 36 in splines 35. To effect disengagement of the members circlip 44 is expanded into groove 28 by a tool fitted with a series of pins 46 having rounded ends, and inserted axially between the splines, the ends of splines 26 being backed off at 33 for this purpose.
