Abstract

815,869. Shaft couplings. GELENKWELLENBAU G.m.b.H. April 16, 1957 [June 18, 1956], No. 12372/57. Class 80 (2). A lubricant seal for the splined slip joint between the hub 2 of a universal joint 1 and the splined end 3 of a vehicle propeller shaft 5 comprises a flexible sleeve 6 engaging at one end a groove 8 in the splined shaft 3. As shown, the other end is fixed to the hub 2 together with a tubular sleeve 9 having a seal 15. In Figs. 2 and 3, not shown, the flexible sleeve 6 is of reentrant bellows form with an outer end secured to an outer tubular sleeve such as 9, Fig. 1, which forms an additional lubricant reservoir and may or may not be extended beyond the flexible sleeve 6 to carry a seal such as 15. Grease, applied through a nipple 10, expands the sleeve 6 elastically, which then feeds the grease under pressure to the splines as required. The outer tubular sleeve limits expansion of the flexible sleeve 6 under grease and centrifugal pressure.
