Abstract

1327952 Universal joints GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 4 Sept 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 38820/70 Heading F2U A constant velocity ratio universal joint having rolling elements 26 transmitting torque between grooves 11 in an inner member 10 and grooves 17 in an outer member 15 encircling the member 10, and having means (e.g. a race 19 with eccentric inner and outer part spherical surfaces 27, 30) to maintain the elements 26 in the bisecting plane, has its outer member 15 integral with the associated shaft 16 which is tubular with a thickened (e.g. upset) end which is deformed (e.g. pressed, extruded, swaged) without removal of material, to form the grooves 17. Lubricant may be confined by a wall 20 and a gaiter seal 23. The wall 20 may have a nose facing the shaft 12 to limit relative axial movement. The joint may be used at both ends of a vehicle propeller shaft.
