Abstract

1,213,931. Universal joints. LOHR & BROMKAMP G.m.b.H. 17 Jan., 1969 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 2891/69. Heading F2U. A universal joint (e.g. of constant velocity ratio) has balls transmitting torque in shear between an inner member 13 and an outer member 5 which is the hub of a gear 4. The gear 4 may be a bevel gear in a vehicle differential joint. The balls may be correctly aligned either by grooves 7, 14 in the members 5, 13 being helical, or by the inner and outer spherical surfaces 11, 8 of a ball race 9 having curvature centres oppositely offset from the joint centre. A partition 16 and a bellows 17, may provide a lubrication chamber for the universal joint separate from the differential gear.
