Abstract

1424286 Universal joints GELENKWELLENBAU GmbH 19 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48856/73 Heading F2U A universal joint comprises a sleeve 12 with a pair of axial grooves 11 with side walls 14 parallel to the sleeve axis, and engaged by rollers 8 each with a part-spherical end face 10 and mounted on one end of a diametral pin 4, the end face 10 engaging an insert 16 (e.g. of plastics) in the respective groove 11, the mating face of the insert comprising a part-cylindrical portion 24 between two part-spherical end portions 24<SP>1</SP> of matching radius of curvature to the faces 10. Each roller 8 may be biased radially outwardly by a dished spring (30), Fig. 3 (not shown), loading the ends of bearing rollers (6). The sleeve 12 may have a second pair of axial grooves 90 degrees out of phase with the grooves 11, for use, after suitable re-assembly, when the grooves 11 become worn.
