Abstract

1,269,507. Coupling reels on shafts. JOHN DUSENBERY CO. Inc. 21 July, 1969 [6 Aug., 1968], No. 37558/68. Heading F2U. A coupling for mounting a sleeve 76 (e.g. on to which a strip is wound when slit from a wider roll) on a drive shaft 40 comprises a fixed inner housing 45 (e.g. cantilevered from a pivoted arm 18), through which the shaft 40 extends, axially-spaced bearings 58, 59 located between the housing 45 and an outer housing 61 along which can slide support members 64, 68, 71 so as to move springs 70, 75 into contact with the sleeve 76 as a result of rotation of the shaft 40 (e.g. by a belt 38 round a pulley 39). As shown a split ring 78 is clamped on the shaft 40 by a bolt 80 and mounts about a pivot axis normal to the drawing a gimbal ring 81 which in turn mounts two rollers 85. These engage the end face 77 of the member 71 which is formed as a cam with a pair of diametrally opposed valleys each having two slopes of 60 degrees extent about the axis of the shaft 40, so that rotation of this shaft drives the rollers 85 up a pair of the slopes pushing the members 64, 68, 71 together to expand the springs 70, 75 to grip the sleeve 76. The member 71 has a pin 72 engaging an axial slot 74 in the housing 61.
