Abstract

1,088,615. Universal joints. NORTH CAROLINA NATIONAL BANK. April 6, 1965, No. 14651/65. Heading F2U. A constant velocity-ratio universal joint comprises torque-transmitting generally barrelshaped rollers 14 disposed between pairs of registering generally axially extending grooves 18, 34 respectively in the outer and inner surfaces 16, 32 of inner and outer members 10, 12, and cams 25 fast in the bottoms of the inner member grooves 18 engage radially inwardly facing spherical recesses (48) in the rollers to position the latter in a plane bisecting the rotational planes of the members 10, 12. The inner member outer surface 16 is spherical with meridian grooves and engages the outer member inner surface 32 which may be spherical also or, as shown, to permit relative axial movement between the members, cylindrical. The grooves 18, 34 are equally spaced and have flat or slightly curved side walls. The rollers comprise oppositely directed frusto-conical surfaces, alternatively the surfaces may be slightly curved. The groove width is slightly greater than the roller diameter for contact on one side only, thereby avoiding rubbing on the other side. The rollers are bored merely to facilitate manufacture and hardening. The cams may be integral with the inner member or, as shown, flat plates fitting closely in slots 24 in the bottom of the grooves 18 and confined as by spring snap rings 26. The radially outer surfaces of the cams have central convex portions (56), with a radius approximately that of the roller recesses (48), and straight end portions (58) into which the portions (56) blend.
