Abstract

950,728. Friction Clutches. C. ROBSON. Sept. 22, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959], No 34301/59. Heading F2C. A gear-wheel 3 is clutched to a shaft 2 by wedges 6 disposed in slots in the gear-wheel and slid to the right to wedge rollers 10 against the shaft. The rollers are mounted in a cage 12 rotatable with the gear-wheel and the faces 7 of the wedges in contact with the rollers are of concave V-section to prevent escape of the rollers. The wedges are moved by push-pins 18, the set of pins for engaging the clutch passing through apertures 19 in a flange 13 of the roller cage and apertures in a flange 15 fast with the gear and being actuated by a fluid-operated piston 25 through a thrust bearing 31. The set of push-pins for disengaging the clutch is similarly actuated and passes through apertures in a flange 16. The flanges 15, 16 secured to the gear-wheel by a pin 32. To allow a slight rotary movement of the roller cage the apertures 19 are wider than the diameter of the push-pins, and the cage is centred by wavy springs 20 disposed in recesses in the edge of the flange 13 and each bearing at one end on a pin 21 fast with the gear-wheel and at the other end on a shoulder 22 of the flange 13.
