Abstract

615,325. Clutches. BULL, K. D., and MACK MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Dec. 7,1945, No. 33181. [Class 80 (ii)] In a synchronizing mechanism for claw clutches, a multiple friction clutch 52, 53 is interposed between the driven member 23 and a baulking member 45 so that the oil drag in the friction clutch retains the baulking member in operative position until axial pressure exerted by a coupling member 38 engages the friction clutch to synchronize the claw clutch teeth, and further axial movement of the coupling 38 displaces the baulking member to allow the driving and driven members 32, 23 to be connected by the member 38. The driving member 32 is splined to the driving shaft 26 and has spline teeth 35, 36 and an intermediate series of teeth 34, the cut-away portions 37 of the rim accommodate the elements 46 of a baulking ring 45 with a circumferential clearance. The baulking ring 45 has teeth 47 on the elements 46 and has internal splines which engage complementary splines on a series of clutch plates 52, between which are the clutch plates 53 splined to the driven member 23. An internal flange 57 and a backing plate 57<1> apply axial pressure to the clutch upon axial movement of the baulking ring. Surrounding the driving member and baulking ring is an axially movable sleeve 38 having internal spline teeth 39 capable of engagement with the splines 24 of the member 23 and shorter doublechamfered teeth 41 engageable with the teeth 47 of the baulking ring. In operation under normal conditions as shown in Fig. 11, the baulking teeth 47 prevent movement of the sleeve 38 by engagement with teeth 41, increase in axial pressure by movement of the sleeve 38 causes engagement of the clutch plates 52, 53 to synchronize the clutch elements, upon which movement of the teeth 47 with respect to the teeth 41 along the chamfered surfaces as shown in Fig. 12 will continue until, as shown in Fig. 13, the teeth 41 pass between the baulking teeth so that teeth 39 engage teeth 24 to effect the drive. The baulk teeth 47 are normally maintained in baulking position by the drag of the oil film between the clutch plates. In a modification, a synchronizing mechanism is shown in which the driven member has female teeth and the clutch surrounds the mechanism.
