Abstract

596,950. Friction and claw clutches. KESTERTON, H. M. Aug. 7, 1945, No. 20205. [Class 80(ii)] In a clutch having a female coned member b, Figs. 1 and 2, co-acting with a split resilient ring f on a male member d axially slidable relative to the female member for engagement, the ring is located by a wedge piece i, loosely supported on an axial flat h on the male member and entering between the adjacent ends of the ring, so that relative rotation between the ring and the male member caused by initial clutching expands the ring into further engagement. As shown, the ring f is flanged and supplementary clutching means are supplied consisting of rollers k, supported on polygonal surfaces j on the member d of corresponding taper to the female cone, and co-acting directly therewith through gaps in the flange. The rollers k are located by the ring, which passes through grooves therein and also through grooves g in the corners of the member d, sufficient play being allowed for independent action of both clutching means. Springs m urge the ring towards the clutching position. As shown applied to a friction synchronised positive clutch between two gear wheels p, r, Figs. 4 and 6, the female coned member b is slidably splined on the teeth of the wheel p and the flat h is on a complementary ring of teeth q on the wheel r. A solid section resilient ring e mounted over the teeth q is normally retained in the axial position shown by a spring clip s and is connected to the gear r through springs t, Fig. 4. On moving the member b to the right, the initial frictional engagement between it and the ring e rotates the latter slightly against the springs t relative to the gear r so that baulking pins u, Fig. 6, normally co-acting with bores v prevent the member b from positively engaging the teeth v until synchronisation is attained.
