Abstract

565,199. Friction clutches. BREARLEY, H. C., JOHNSON, E. F., and B.J.N. ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. June 4, 1943, No. 8979. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch an endless helical spring 9 is used as a wedging member between conical faces 10a, 11a on an abutment member 10 and slidable clutch member 11. The spring 9 co-operates with a slidable actuating sleeve 13 having cylindrical parts 13a, 13b connected by a conical face 14. When the sleeve 13 is moved to engage the clutch, the spring is contracted inwardly into engagement with the surface 13b so that it separates the members 10, 11. As shown, applied to a pair of multi-plate clutches, each member 11 is screwed to a pressure plate 12 so that wear can be taken up by relative rotation of the parts 11, 12. A spring-pressed pin 15 carried by the member 11 engages one of a number of holes 16 in the member 12 to lock these parts in adjusted position. The spring 9 may be in one piece or formed of a number of springs connected end to end.
