Abstract
263,041. Herbert, Sir A.. Vernon, P. V., and Wilson, C. June 25, 1926. (Clutches, friction.-In a friction clutch in which one element is constituted by a coil formed at one end integrally with its supporting element 2 and having a peripheral engaging face for engagement with the other element of the clutch, the coils are first cut in spaced relationship and thereafter are compressed together so that they acquire a permanent set in contact with one another. The clutch is then hardened and tempered and the engaging surface ground. The element 2 is slidably keyed on the shaft, and a pin mounted in a diametral hole 7 in the element connects the clutch with the operating rod slidable in the shaft. The clutch shown is of the double-ended conical type, and the slits 3 forming the coils terminate in holes 4. The coned engaging surfaces may be machined to an angle dissimilar to that of the co-operating surfaces with which they engage.
