In a friction clutch in which the coupling pressure is transmitted from a central spring, through levers 2 the wear on the friction surfaces is automatically adjusted by means of oneway locking devices 4, 5 between the pressure plate 3 and the operating levers 2 and further locking devices 9, 10 between the plate 3 and the casing 6. When the clutch is engaged the wedges 5 acted upon by springs 8 lock the members 4 to the plate 3 so that the spring pressure is applied to the plate and bolts 9 secured to the plate move frictionally through conical wedge members 10 retained by nuts 11. On disengagement the locking devices 4, 5 are freed and the plate 3 moves back under the action of springs 32 until the conical wedge members 10 engage the casing and prevent further movement. The locking devices 4, 5 and 9, 10 take up a different position relative to the plate 3 on any wear of the friction surfaces occurring. Modified arrangements utilise locking ring devices acting upon bolts connected to the operating levers or the pressure plate of the clutch and serving to take up any wear developed in a similar manner.
