551,378. Friction clutches. NEWTON, N. B. Aug. 18, 1941, No. 10472. [Class 80 (ii)] A driving plate for a friction clutch is connected to the driving member b near its outer perimeter by pins a and is in two parts c', c<SP>2</SP> which are spaced by balls d in radial taper grooves e. Under centrifugal force the balls d move outwardly to engage the clutch. As shown, the clutch includes a withdrawable presser plate i acted on by springs j, and axial separation of the parts c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> is limited by a bolt h. Movement of the plate i towards the friction plates is limited by the studs k for automatic disengagement centrifugal catch levers m pivoted on the back plate n engage behind the nuts o on the studs k. If, when the clutch is stationary, the presser plate i is withdrawn, springs q disengage the levers m from the studs k, and the automatic clutch release action ceases.
