Abstract
457,206. friction clutches. TAYLOR, L., 22, Thornham New Road, Castleton, Rochdale. June 18, 1935, No. 17461. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch wherein inner clutch plates 1 are splined on a sleeve 4, a stiff resilient disc a, which is dished, fluted, sinuous, &c. so as to be capable of being flattened under pressure, and which is splined on the sleeve 4, is interposed between the plates and the presser ring 8. The disc a provides compensation for wear and enables the clutch to slip on overload. The ring 8 is moved to clutching position, through toggle units 13 arranged between the ring 8 and a ring 12 adjustably screwed on the sleeve 4, by movement of a sleeve 15, as described in Specification 393,703. The rings 8, 12 are coupled by dowel pins (not shown) so as to rotate together. A ring 6, splined on the sleeve 4, is interposed between the ring 8 and disc a. A locking pin 9 mounted in the ring 8 is urged by a spring 10 into one of a number of holes in the ring 6. Upon withdrawing the pin 9 from the hole, the ring 8 can be rotated until the pin engages in another of the holes, the ring 12 being thus screwed along the sleeve 4 to adjust the clutch. Springs 14 assist the disengagement of the clutch. As shown in Fig. 2, the dished ring a is formed with spaced holes a<1> and slots a<2>. The ring a is of metal or other resilient material such as vulcanized rubber compound, or may comprise rubber compound vulcanized to a metal ring or between a pair of metal rings. A double clutch is also described.
