491,709. Friction clutches. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd. March 16, 1938, No. 8189. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1937. [Class 80 (ii)] Centrifugal engaging pressure is applied to the pressure plate 17 of a plate clutch by the wedging action of pairs of coaxial rollers, one roller 38 of each pair being rotatable freely through bearing rollers 41 about the other roller 39. The rollers move radially outwards under the influence of centrifugal force, the longer inner roller 39 engaging a pair of camming surfaces 44 on the pressure plate while the outer roller 38 engages a camming surface 43 on the clutch cover plate 11. Each pair of rollers is maintained in engagement with the camming surfaces by light springs 46. The centrifugal pressure serves to augment the pressure of engaging springs (not shown) acting between the plates 11 and 17. Disengagement is effected through radial levers 20 which act on lugs 32 of the plate 17 through struts 33.
