Disc. - In order to ensure gradual engagement of a friction clutch or brake, employing a high engaging pressure, the driven or other plate. 2 is formed of two or more annular elements 3 having friction faces 9, connected at their inner periphery by bolt 7, a spacing element 6 being included so that in the disengaged position the elements are slightly separated. In the engaged position, Fig. 2, the elements 3 are brought into contact by the presser plate 11 connected to the flywheel 10, thereby distorting the arms of the discs, which are made resilient to allow of this.
