Abstract
491,708. Clutch plates. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd. March 10, 1938, No. 7536. Convention date, April 22, 1937. [Class 80 (ii)] A driven clutch plate comprises a carrier disc, stamped from a single piece of sheet steel, and formed with an inner rim 12, riveted to a splined hub member 2, a set of spokes 9 extending from the rim 12 to an outer annular rim 8, and another set of radially-bowed and circumferentially-flexible spokes 11 extending from the rim 12 to sections 10 which are severed from the rim 8. The sections 10 taper outwardly, so that, due to the bowing of their spokes 11, gaps are provided between the edges of each section and the adjacent edges of the recesses in the rim 8. Friction facings 5 are riveted only to the sections 10 and bear frictionally against the rim 8. Torque applied to the facings 5 is thus transmitted to the hub in part through the resilient spokes 11 and in part by friction through the spokes 9. Such friction also serves to damp out vibration, and may be augmented by bowing each section 10 and the radially-adjacent part 18 of the rim 8 as shown in Fig. 5. When excessive torque is being transmitted, the leading edges of the sections 10 contact with the adjacent edges of the recesses in the rim 8, whereby damage to the spokes 11 is prevented.
