Improvements in double friction plate clutch assemblies, characterized in that each assembly is provided with a transmission element and a main pressure plate; an intermediate pressure plate interposed between the transmission element and the main pressure plate, each pressure plate being supported to rotate and effect relative axial displacement with the transmission element; a first driven plate interposed between a transmission surface on the transmission element and a first transmission surface on the intermediate pressure plate; a second driven plate interposed between a second transmission surface on the intermediate pressure plate and a transmission surface on the main pressure plate; resilient means acting on the main pressure plate to frictionally engage the driven plates with the respective transmission surfaces; and automatically adjustable stop means acting between the main pressure plate and the intermediate pressure plate, to limit the relative axial separation of the main and intermediate pressure plates when the clutch is disengaged.
