747,234. Disc brakes. WELLMAN CO., S. K. May 11, 1954, No. 13747/54. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A disc clutch, which may be used as a brake if one of its principal members is held stationary, has a plurality of axially slidable pressure plates 13, 14, splined to a member 11 secured to a driving member 10 and at least one clutch member 30 axially slidable on splines 17 of a driven member 16. Each clutch member 30 comprises a pair of resilient discs 40, 50, secured together at spaced points by rivets 45 and having friction facings 41, 51 of sintered material, predominately metallic. Between the discs 40, 50 are springs 32 adapted to impart a waved form to the discs when the clutch is disengaged. Each spring has a split hub 43 engageable in a hole 44, one of the discs 40, 50 having a recess to accommodate the spring when it is flattened upon clutch engagement. To increase flexibility the discs 40, 50 may be slotted, as at 60. As shown, bearings 18 and a packing 20 are arranged between the member 16 and the members 10, 11. The clutch runs in oil and each friction facing 41, 51 has spiral grooves 61 to facilitate removal of the oil film upon clutch engagement.
