Abstract

412,898. Free - wheel clutches. DUNCAN, F., and REBBECK, F. E., c/o Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Queen's Island, Belfast. March 14, 1934, No. 8019. [Class 80 (ii).] In a free-wheel clutch, a split spring ring 3 is adapted to be expanded into frictional contact with an outer driven member 1 by means of inclined struts 4 having rounded ends engaging between diverging notches formed in the inner surface of the ring and on the driving shaft 2 respectively. A collar 5 is slidable on the shaft 2 to bring an internal conical surface 5<b> into engagement with an outer conical surface 3<a> on the ring so as to contract the latter and prevent drive. The members 1, 3 may have interengaging V-shaped or other circumferential grooves and projections to increase the frictional contact.
