Abstract

573,319. Friction clutches. STANCLIFFE, C. W., and STANCLIFFE FREEWHEELING, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1943, No. 17282. [Class 80 (ii)] In a coil clutch intermediate resilient segmental members are provided between the coil and a driving or driven member, the said segmental members being shaped so that the coil first engages their ends and presses their centre parts against' the surface of the driving or driven member, the engagement progressing towards their ends as the take-up proceeds, disengagement subsequently progressing from the ends towards the centre. As shown, segments 3 are arranged between an outer housing 4 and an expanding coil I carried by an inner housing 2. The radius of the segments 3 is slightly less than the bore of the housing 4. As the coil expands to engage the clutch, the engagement between the segments 3 and housing 4 gradually progresses from the centre part towards the end portions. When disengaging the reverse action takes place. The segments may make up one or more substantially complete rings or turns of a helix. Specification 556,940 is referred to.
