Abstract
603,075. Clutches. FAWICK, T. L. Feb. 17, 1944, No. 2960. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a clutch or brake in which a fluid distensible member 22, carried on one of the relatively rotatable members 10, is expanded to effect engagement of a circumferential series of friction shoes 16 with the other member 14, the torque is transmitted from the friction shoes by resilient bars 29 extending between the shoes and engaged in flanges 17, 18 of the member 10, the end faces of the shoes being curved. Springs 25 arranged in slots in the friction shoes and corresponding holes in the flanges disengage the shoes when the fluid pressure is released. An annular cooling chamber 36 may be provided for a cooling fluid. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 10, disengaging springs 56 also serve as torque transmitting members and are mounted in rubber blocks 60 on the supporting member. A combined clutch and brake embodying both forms of connecting the shoes is also described.
