Abstract

577,636. Friction clutches. FAWICK, T. L. Jan. 14, 1944, No. 750. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a friction clutch or brake one of the two relatively rotatable members comprises two annular rings 14 of rubber or like material which carry friction shoes 13 on their outer peripheries and are bonded to plates 21, 21a at their inner peripheries. These plates are adapted to be moved together to deform the rubber rings and to press the friction shoes into engagement with the other clutch or brake member 11 and to be moved apart by spring 23 and the resilience of the rubber rings to release the engagement. As shown the actuation is by fluid pressure from a conduit 42 to pistons 35 which move sleeves 24, 26 attached to plates 21, 21a in opposite directions, In a modified arrangement a single partconical ring of rubber is used and axial pressure at its inner periphery forces friction shoes on its outer periphery into engagement. Various forms of friction shoes may be used or the rubber rings may act direct on the other clutch or brake member.
