Abstract
708,341. Disc brakes. CROFTS (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Feb. 6, 1952 [Feb. 7, 1951], No. 3010/51. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXIV] A fluid-operated brake comprises a pair of plate members 44, 52, Fig. 3, with an interposed disc 53 splined in a member 55, one member 52 being axially fixed while the other member 44 is splined on a member 43 secured within member 52 by an annular plate 49 which serves to clamp between the parts 52, 49 and 43, 49 the edges of an annular flexible diaphragm 47 covering an annular recess 48 in the plate 49 to form a chamber to which pressure fluid may be supplied. An annular piston-like part 66, integral with member 44, is urged by springs 46 against the diaphragm within the annular space between the members 43, 52. Member 55 is stationary and member 43 is fast on shaft 42 to be braked, the springs 46 normally engaging the brake while pressure fluid causes disengagement. In the combined clutch and brake shown in Fig. 1, the brake 2 is arranged as in Fig. 3 but with member 52 stationary and member 55 being secured to the driven shaft 10, and the clutch comprises a ring 8 carried by member 55 and adapted to be contracted on to a driving drum 6 by a tube 7 adapted to be expanded by pressure fluid supplied simultaneously thereto and to the recess 48, so as to engage the clutch and disengage the brake. On release of the fluid supply, the clutch disengages and the springs 46 engage the brake.
