Abstract
709,041. External drum brakes. STOECKICHT, W. G. April 30, 1952 [Oct. 3, 1951], No. 10893/52. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXIV] In a brake comprising a plurality of shoes 1 movable radially into contact with a drum 13 by pressure fluid supplied to an annular space 14, the latter is sealed by a resilient split sleeve 16 of rubber or the like secured by adhesive or by vulcanization to a resilient split metal ring 18 which is fastened by bolts 24 to one of the shoes, the split 17 in the sleeve 16 being bridged by a strip 21 of thin sheet metal secured to a plate 22 lodged in a recess in one of the shoes. As shown, the ring 18 is secured to the inner surface of the sleeve 16, but it may alternatively be secured to the outer surface. Sheet metal strips 30, 31 with inwardlycurved ends may be attached to the ends of the sleeve 16 to press the latter against the strip 21. The sleeve 16 may be replaced by a number of segments, the gaps between which are bridged by strips of thin sheet metal.
