Abstract
679,019. Piston packing. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. March 24, 1950 [March 25, 1949], No. 8215/49. Class 122(i) A seal between two relatively movable members comprises a packing ring expandible radially under fluid pressure and/or by its own resilience, into sealing contact with one of the members and a sleeve which normally holds the ring compressed away from the member but is movable axially under fluid pressure to permit expansion of the ring. A packing ring 1, V- shaped in cross-section is secured against a flange 3 of a piston 2 secured to a shaft 8, by means of an L-shaped annulus 5 held in position by a spring ring 6. A disc 7 carried on the shaft 8 has a sleeve 9 which in one position compresses the ring 1 away from the cylinder wall. A spring 10 biasses the sleeve to this position. The piston 2 has a cylindrical extension 11 containing a pressure plate 12 and a packing ring 14 subjected to the pressure within the main cylinder. Movement of the pressure plate 12 is transmitted to the disc 7 by a plurality of plungers 13. The seal may be subjected to an initial standing fluid pressure within the main cylinder.
