Abstract

596,894. Piston packing. DICK, B. Aug. 3, 1945, No. 20013. [Class 122 (i)] A piston sealing device for preventing extrusion of the piston packing member into the space between the piston and the cylinder comprises a cylinder engaging a packing member 4, carried by the piston head and backed by a cylinder (ngaging split-ring 5, the circular space within which is filled with a disc 8 of yieldable material which is also interposed between the ends 6, 7 of the split-ring 5. The ends 6, 7 diverge axially away from the piston head to form a groove engaged by a projection 9 on the disc 8. Fluid pressure transmitted by the packing member 4, which may be of rubber, to the disc 8 forces the ring 5 into close engagement with the cylinder. The disc 8 may be formed integral with the packing 4.
