Abstract

710,374. Stuffing-box substitutes; piston packing. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and LEVITATION, Ltd. Sept. 30, 1952 [Oct. 18, 1951] No. 24373/51. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) A packing device between relatively slidable inner and outer members, such as a rod 11 and a cylinder 10, comprises a sleeve 17 of relatively hard material having, at its end adjacent the pressure side of the device, a rib 18 of triangulai cross section urged into sealing contact with the rod 11 by a backing ring 19 of softer resilient material radially compressed during assembly between the sleeve 17 and the cylinder 10, the sleeve 17 being supported adjacent its end remote from the pressure side of the packing device by a rigid sleeve 16. The backing ring 19 is of rubber and the sleeves 17 and 16 are respectively of nylon and metal, the latter being integral with a ring 15 abutting an inturned flange 14 of the cylinder 10. In a modification the metal sleeve 16 extends between the backing ring 19 and the sleeve 17 which has a portion closely fitting on the rod and a circumferential recess between the said portion and the rib 18. The packing device may be mounted on the rod 11 the rib 18 then being pressed into contact with the inner surface of the cylinder.
