Abstract

734,691. Piston and stuffing-box packing. WALES-STRIPPIT CORPORATION. Sept. 22, 1952 [July 10, 1952], No. 23686/52. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXII] Packing for a piston 24, or a stuffing-box 130, comprises a sleeve 35 with a circular, V-shaped groove 37 in one of its ends and a resilient ring 36 seating in the groove, the groove having walls 38, 39 of different lengths of which the wall 39 adjacent the cylinder, when the piston carries the packing, is the longest and forms a flexible lip 45 adapted to be pressed against the cylinder by the ring, and the latter being thick enough to extend from the groove and press against the wall of the piston. As applied to packing the piston 24 of a liquid-spring 20, the sleeve 35, which may be made from a plastic such as a bearing nylon or one of the high-strength vinyls, is retained on a reduced shank 26 of the piston by a cap 27 provided with screw-threads to engage the shank. The sleeve may be formed with a wall of constant thickness or one that tapers away from the ring 36 or has a shoulder 42. Upon the piston being displaced and compresing the silicone-base liquid in the cylinder, the liquid, passing the cap 27, Fig. 3, forces the ring, which may be made of soft rubber, into the groove 37, Fig. 4. At liquid pressure approaching 20,000 1b./square inch the sleeve 35 may be compressed sufficiently for it to thicken into engagement with the piston and the cylinder, closing gaps 65, 66. A sleeve 130, Fig. 6, is formed with a lip 145 on the inside for packing the stuffing-box 130, the lip being pressed against a piston 101 by a resilient ring (not shown). The relative proportions of the length, diameter and thickness of the sleeve are stated and compared with the length of the wall 39.
