Abstract

797,684. Stuffing-box and piston packing. DOWTY SEALS, Ltd. April 9, 1956 [June 30, 1955], No. 18956/55. Classes 122 (1) and 122(5). In a sealing arrangement between two relatively movable cylindrical members, for example a piston 1 and and cylinder 2 of an hydraulic pit prop, comprising a U-section packing ring 4 of rubber or similar resilient material located in a recess in one of the members, extrusion of the packing ring is prevented by an L-section supporting ring 5 fitting in a complementary recess 6 in the packing ring and made of non- metallic material harder than that of the packing ring. The packing ring 4 and the supporting ring 5 are of synthetic rubber and a polyamide synthetic resin respectively. An aluminium or other soft metal ring 9 abuts the ring 5 and acts as a guide ring for the piston. In a modification, the ring 9 is replaced by an extension of the ring 5.
