Abstract
788,106. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. Oct. 27, 1955 [Nov. 1, 1954], No. 31553/54. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In a seal between relatively slidable parts, such as a piston 11 and its cylinder 19, in which two sealing rings 15 of resilient material, such as synthetic rubber, are located in series in grooves 13, 14 in one of the members and pressure build-up in the space 23 between the rings is relieved through vents 22 in at least one of the rings, the vents are controlled by one or more non-return valve members 20 attached to the ring. The valve members 20 may be bonded to or integral with the ring and may be slit radially to form separate flaps for each vent. Backing rings of nylon, synthetic polyamide resin sold under the Trade name " Akulon," resin impregnated material, polytetrafluoroethylene, synthetic rubber sold under the Trade name " Kel F " or glass fibre held together by a plastic substance such as polytetrafluoroethylene may be fitted behind the rings to prevent them extruding into the space 23. The backing rings may be cup-shaped, the sealing rings being complementarily shaped. In a modification, Fig. 4, the sealing ring comprises a rubber part 26 with vents 22, and an L-section part 27 of harder rubber, rubberized fabric, nylon, " Akulon " or polytetrafluoroethylene bonded to or having an interference fit on the first part so that its longer arm sealingly contacts the cylinder 19 whilst its shorter arm 28 acts as a non-return valve for the vents 22.
