757,225. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. Oct. 29, 1954 [Nov. 13, 1953; May 17, 1954], Nos. 31606/53 and 14443/54. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) In a sealing arrangement for relatively slidable members, such as a piston 11 and cylinder 16, in which two sealing rings 14, 15 of resilient material, such as synthetic rubber, are located in series in grooves 12, 13 in one of the members, pressure buildup in the space 22 between the rings is relieved through vent openings 17 provided in at least one of the rings and controlled by spring-loaded non-return valves 18, 19. In a modification, Fig. 2, the valves 18, 19 and their loading springs 20, 21 are replaced by rubber rings 23, 24 shaped so that they abut the bottom outer corners of the grooves 12, 13 and are urged, by their own resilience to close the openings 17 and backing rings 27, 28 of nylon or rubberized fabric or polytetrafluoroethylene are fitted behind the sealing rings to prevent extrusion of the latter into the space 22. The backing rings may be cupshaped or triangular in cross-section, the adjacent faces of the sealing rings being complementarily shaped. Where the piston 11 is subjected to continuous pressure on one face, and intermittent pressure on the other, the seal adjacent the latter face only need be provided with vent openings.
