Abstract

1,124,203. Piston-rod seals. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. 29 June, 1966 [22 Sept., 1965], No. 29202/66. Heading F2B. In a reciprocating gas compressor comprising a piston 17 reciprocable in a compressor section 10 and having a rod 15 extending into a crankcase section 11 leakage of gas along the rod into the crankcase section is prevented by means comprising an annular cavity 29, Fig. 3, surrounding the rod and through which liquid is circulated at a pressure greater than that of the gas in the compressor section side of the cavity, the cavity being sealed at each end by sealing means. The cavity 29 and sealing means are located in a housing 16 secured to an internal flange 22 of the crankcase section 11. Oil from the crankcase sump 19 is circulated through the cavity 29 by a system including a pump 36, filter 37, pressure regulating valve 41 and relief valve 43. The sealing means at the compressor section end of the cavity 29 comprises two packing rings 54 compressed between the bottom of a cup member 50 and a backing plate 59 and having inner and outer lips and a central rib 55, 56 and 57 respectively. An O- ring 62 is seated on a groove 63 between the rib 57 and the inner lip 56 of the ring adjacent the plate 59. The sealing means at the other end of the cavity comprises three packing rings 64 similar to the rings 54 and housed in a cup member 65. The packing rings 54 and 64 and the O-ring 62 are of soft, resilient material, e.g. rubber. The pump 36 may be electrically controlled in such manner that the compressor will not operate unless the pump is operating and the compressor may be stopped with the pump still operating.
