Abstract

1,263,805. Shaft seals. RIGAKU DENKI CO. Ltd. 21 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 14982/69. Heading F2B. A shaft seal for a vacuum chamber 1 comprises first, second and third packing members 9, 8 and 7, the space between the first and second being connected to the vacuum chamber by a conduit 14 and the space between the second and third being filled with a low viscosity oil open to atmospheric pressure. The lips of the packing members are pressed by garter springs 10. An oil reservoir 11 supplies the oil to the space between the packing members 7 and 8 and a detachable oil sump 17 between the packing members 8 and 9 collects leakage.
