Classes 122 (1), 122 (3) and 122 (5)] A flexible packing ring for use between relatively fixed or relatively movable members comprises, in radial cross-section, a solid section having opposite rounded ribs and an adjacent section having opposite relatively sharp edged ridges, the ribs and ridges being adapted to sealingly contact opposite walls of a packing chamber defined by the members. As shown in Fig. 3 the packing ring 1, which is preferably of synthetic rubber but may be of flexible plastic such as polyethylene or tygon, has oppositely facing pairs of sharp ridges 2 and 3 of sawtooth form on its outer and inner peripheries separated by a rounded rib 4 and 5 respectively, the ridges being dimensioned so that they are deformed radially when positioned between the members 10 and 11 to a greater extent than is the portion of the ring between the ribs 4 and 5. The ends of the ring are preferably recessed as at 6 so that the ridges are on flexible lips 7 and 8 urged apart by the pressure of the sealed fluid. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), spreader rings, e.g. of thermoplastic material, are provided to urge.the lips 7 and 8 apart and to prevent extrusion of the ring 1 into the gap between the members 10 and 11. The bottom of the packing groove may have oppositely tapered frusto-conical walls. If the pressure of the fluid to be sealed is high on one side only of the packing, the packing ring 15 may have only one pair of external and internal ridges as shown in Fig. 4. In another modification, Fig. 7, particularly for relatively rotatable members, the packing ring 40 has coplanar ridges 41 and a rib 43 on one side face and coplanar ridges 42 and a rib 44 on the other side face and is compressed between parallel plane end walls of the members 45 and 46. The flexible lips of of the packing ring may be urged outwardly by split expander rings or garter springs. Two or more packing rings may be arranged in the packing chamber.
