Abstract

851,627. Joint-making packing. DOWTY SEALS Ltd. July 22, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 23727/58. Class 122 (3). Joint-making packing comprises a gasket ring 10 having in at least one face a channel 11 containing a rubber &c. ring 14 which, in crosssection, is coextensive with at least one wall 16 of the channel and inclined axially outwardly therefrom to a sealing lip 17 and has a groove 19 having a volume behind the face of the ring 10 greater than the volume of unstressed rubber projecting from it whereby, when the packing is in use, the sealing edge may be deformed by a joint face 20 into the plane of the gasket ring face, as shown in the lower part of Fig. 1. Pressure fluid in the cavity 21 urges the sealing lip against the joint face 20. Channels 11 on each side of the ring 10 are separated by a web 12 having circumferentially-spaced holes 13 and the ring 14 is moulded into each channel and interconnected through the holes 13. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), sealing edges are provided on both sides of the groove 19. The ring 10 may be of metal or of elastomeric material substantially harder than the material of ring 14.
