Abstract

762,232. Piston and stuffing-box packing. CLAYTON-WRIGHT, Ltd., H. May 12, 1955 [May 22, 1954], No. 15138/54. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A piston or stuffing-box sealing ring 13 is made of rubber or like resilient material and has a radial cross-section of generally square or rectangular form, the sides 18 of which are slightly concave near the central parts so as to provide a sealing portion 19 at each corner. The ring is preferably of square section with the sealing portions 19 part circular. As applied to a stuffing-box 11 for packing a shaft 10, the ring is located in a groove 14 formed between the end face 15 of the gland nut 12 and the faces 16, 17 of the box counterbore, the width of the groove being slightly greater than that of the ring and the depth of the groove being slightly less than that of the ring.
