Abstract

1,239,873. Shaft seals. R. HEINRICH 3 July, 1969 [6 July, 1968], No. 33622/69 Heading F2B. The low pressure side of a lip seal, Fig. 1, or sliding face seal, Fig. 4, is provided with ribs or grooves 10, 11 which are inclined to a plane normal to the axis of the seal and arranged in pairs in V-formation, the ribs or grooves of each pair being symmetrically disposed with respect to a plane containing the axis of the seal. The arrangement provides an air flow towards the high pressure side of the seal to oppose leakage irrespective of the direction of rotation of the shaft. The seal may be made of synthetic rubber.
