Abstract

1,212,715. Shaft seals. STEFA INDUSTRI A.B. 14 Feb., 1968, No. 7238/68. Heading F2B. In a rotary shaft seal comprising an elastomeric sealing ring having a hub portion 11 gripping the shaft 10 and an integral frustoconical flange 12 whose free edge 13 is in rubbing contact with a radially-extending surface 14, the inner surface of the flange 12 is formed with grooves 17 which, in use, act as fan means to prevent grit entering from the space 15 between the edge 13 and the surface 14. The grooves 17 may be radial or non-radial as in Fig. 2 and may terminate short of the edge 13, Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown). The flange 12 may be urged towards the surface 14 by a garter spring (19, Fig. 5).
