Abstract

622,141. Stuffing-box substitutes. FLEXIBOX, Ltd., and PORGES, F. B. Nov. 22, 1946, No. 34740. [Class 122(v)] A mechanical seal, for making a fluid tight joint between a revolving shaft 8 and a stationary surface 2, comprises a spring 6 around the shaft which is an interference fit on a driving sleeve 9 at one end and on a sleeve-like extension 5 of the rotary seal ring 4 at the other end, and a stationary seal ring 1 against which the rotary seal ring bears, the hand (i.e. right or left hand) of the spring being such that any tendency of the rotary seal ring to turn relatively to the shaft causes such ring to tend to wind up the spring and to close it more firmly upon the driving sleeve and the sleeve-like extension of the rotary seal ring at the other end so resisting such tendency. Static seal rings 7, 3 are disposed in the seal rings 3, 1, respectively. A pin may be fitted into the stationary seal ring to prevent it turning relatively to the stationary surface.
