Abstract

618,347. Stuffing-box substitutes. WASHBOURNE, W. D. Oct. 23, 1946, No. 31447. [Class 122 (v)] In an oil seal device for rotary shafts of the type comprising two relatively rotatable sealing rings interposed between the shaft and a housing a, a primary flexible shaft-gripping ring e has bonded to its outer periphery a radial outwardly protruding rigid flange e<1>, and rubber or like rings f are interposed between the flange e<1> and the housing a to hold both the primary ring e and the flange e<1> in balanced suspension in the housing a. As shown, the flange e<1> is formed by two angle-shape rings. In a modification, the flange is formed by the stem of an inverted T-section ring, and in a further modification it is formed by a flat apertured ring. Metal or synthetic resin wear-resistant rings f<1> are bonded to the rings f, which in turn are bonded to the housing a.
