Abstract

727,135. Stuffing-box substitutes. LAUTERWASSER, K., and LORENZ, A. June 5, 1951 [May 11, 1951], No. 13331/51. Class 122 (5). A shaft seal comprises radially inner and outer annular portions 5, 6 interconnected by a flexible membrane 7, one of the portions having a side face urged into rubbing contact with a part to be sealed by a plate type spring completely embedded in the membrane and in at least one of the annular portions and being substantially parallel to the side face of the seal remote from its sealing face. The spring consists of a flat ring 15 with tongues 16 extending radially inwardly therefrom, the ring 15 being embedded in the outer portion 5 clamped between a stationary ball-race 3 and the shaft housing 2, and the tongues 16 extending into the member 7 and the inner portion 6 which is thereby urged into sealing contact with the rotary ball-race 3<SP>1</SP>. The outer portion 5 and the membrane 7 are of rubber and the inner portion is of rigid self-lubricating material, e.g. artificial resin with graphite admixture.
