650,572. Stuffing-box substitutes. GARLOCK PACKING CO. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 5107. Convention date, April 8, 1947. [Class 122(v)] In an oil seal 11 for sealing an annular space between vertically rotatable outer and inner machine elements C, A, a sealing element 13 has a sealing ring of soft flexible moulded material with a portion 22 for making a securing seal with the inner element A, an integral radial flange 21 and a supporting ring 23 of U-shape cross-section disposed with the concave part of the U facing inwardly and substantially completely occupied by and bonded to the material of the flange 21; a rigid shell 12 having a cylindrical portion 16 to press fit into the element C has a radial flange 18 extending at least to the radial inward extension of the ring 23; clamping means, including a filler ring 15 having an annular radial surface at the side of the flange 21, remote from the radial flange 18, and extending radially over at least an area corresponding to the radial area between the outer and inner peripheries of the ring 23 co-act with the flange 18 to compress the flange 21 axially therebetween. The U arms of the ring 23 are of greater radial dimension than the spacing between the arms and have a tendency to be urged together by the axial compression to supplement the bond between the sealing ring 20 and the supporting ring 23 to prevent radially inward displacement of the flange 21. One arm 23a of the ring 23 is embedded in the flange 21 and the other arm 23b is partially embedded in one side face of the flange 21, the other side face being in sealing contact with the flange 18 of the shell 12. In a further embodiment, the outer diameter of the element 13, Fig. 2, is less than the inner diameter of the portion 16 of the shell 12 and a filler ring 29 of substantially the same capacity for resisting the clamping face is provided to fill the space between the element 13 and the portion 16. In a further embodiment the arms of the supporting ring are fixed to the opposite side face of the radial flange of the sealing ring. An annular spring carrier 14 may be employed. A method of making the sealing element by moulding is described. Specification 612,830 is referred to.
