Abstract

809,458. Stuffing-box substitutes. GITS BROS. MFG. CO. Dec. 7, 1955 [Nov. 1, 1955], No. 35125/55. Class 122 (5). In a rubbing-collar type shaft seal in which a sealing-ring 14 of brittle lubricating material, such as carbon, is carried by an element 20 of flexible resilient material, such as rubber, comprising two sleeve portions 19, 21 which are interconnected by a diaphragm portion 22 and clamped by rigid bands 25, 23 to an outer cylindrical surface of the sealing-ring and to the shaft 12 respectively, the sleeve portion 19 is of substantially uniform thickness so that uniform compressive stresses are exerted on the ring and means are provided to prevent relative rotation between the portion 19 and the ring. The band 23 is of hexagonal cross-section with rounded corners and slidably fits within a similarly shaped tubular extension 30 of the band 25. The ring 14 has a pair of diametrically opposed axially-extending recesses engaged by corresponding projections on the sleeve portion 19 and a face 15 urged by a spring 32, compressed between the band 25 and a plate 33 held by a ring 34, into sealing contact with a face 16 of a ring 17 mounted in the shaft housing 11 by a resilient packing-ring 18.
