Abstract

854,465. Piston rings; stuffing-box substitutes. BOGE G.m.b.H. Jan. 4, 1957 [Jan. 21, 1956; May 7, 1956], No. 481/57. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In a sealing arrangement between relatively movable members, for example a piston 1 and cylinder 2, and comprising a sealing ring 3 carried by one of the members and urged into contact with the other by the sealed pressure the sealing ring is relieved to provide a sealing edge 3A at one end and is supported at its other end both axially and radially by a supporting ring 7, the space 8 between the sealing edge and the supporting ring being vented to a pressure P 2 less than P 1 whereby the sealing edge pressure is greater than P 1 . The supporting ring 7 may be integral with the piston as shown or attached thereto. The sealing ring may be of polyamide. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, in which the sealing ring 15 is carried by a cylinder 14 and seals a pistonrod 13, the sealing edge 12 is bevelled and the ring 15 is urged axially by a spring 18 against a gasket 16 inserted between the ring and the cylinder. It is stated that the invention may be applied to seal the space between the end surfaces of two relatively rotatable parts.
