A shaft seal comprises a rubber &c. ring 1 formed on one periphery with a sealing lip 2 to engage the shaft or its housing and resiliently detachably engaged at its other periphery with a retaining ring or rings 6 adapted to be mounted in the housing or on the shaft. The rings 6 are a pair of L-section rings welded back-toback to form a T-section ring whose stem 7 engages a groove 3 in the ring 1, the groove 3 being in the inner periphery for an external seal, Fig. 1, or in the external periphery for an internal seal. In a modification, Fig. 4, the ring 1 is fitted between two split spring rings 15, the mating faces of the rings 1 and 15 being tapered. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the rubber ring 1 has a dovetail portion engaged in a corresponding channel in a split-ring 17. Relative rotation between the ring 1 and the rings 6, 15 or 17 may be prevented by lugs on one engaging notches on the other. To assemble the seal, the retaining rings 6, 15 or 17 are first sprung on the shaft or into the housing and may be additionally held in position by welding or by screws and the rubber ring is then sprung into its operative position. The rubber ring may be reinforced by metal, plastic or fabric and may include a slow-acting swelling agent which under the influence of lubricant and/or by an ageing process causes the rubber to swell slightly.
